Fuel crisis: SA Health response falls short

April 2026

On 31 March, ANMF SA wrote to SA Health outlining the significant impact the current fuel crisis is having on nurses and midwives across South Australia.

In our correspondence, we called for urgent and practical measures to support the workforce, including:

  • An immediate increase to the current fuel subsidy rate
  • A review of fleet vehicle availability
  • The introduction of a temporary fuel allowance for nurses and midwives required to travel long distances to attend work

These measures are critical to ensuring nurses and midwives can continue delivering essential care to communities across the state.

Disappointing Response from SA Health

We are extremely disappointed with the response received from SA Health. Rather than addressing the concerns raised, SA Health has deflected the issue as a whole of government matter and put responsibility to the Office of the Commissioner for Public Sector Employment.

This response fails to recognise the immediate pressures facing nurses and midwives and does not offer any relief during a period of rapidly rising fuel costs.

Federal Advocacy Continues

At the national level, ANMF continues to strongly advocate on behalf of nurses and midwives during this crisis.

ANMF has applied to the Fair Work Commission seeking an increase to travel allowances for nurses and midwives who are required to use their own vehicles for work purposes. The application proposes a 12‑month variation to the Nurses Award 2020, allowing fuel allowances to adjust in line with fluctuating fuel prices.

This application recognises the ongoing financial burden placed on nurses and midwives and the need for responsive, fair adjustments during times of economic pressure.

Important Reminder for SA Health Employees

During this period, ANMF SA reminds all SA Health employees that:

They are under no obligation to use their private vehicles for work purposes.

As outlined in the SA Health Human Resources Manual (Section 8‑8, page 383):

“No employee is required, under any circumstances whatsoever, to use their private vehicle for official purposes if they do not wish to do so.”

ANMF SA will continue to advocate strongly for meaningful action to support nurses and midwives and will keep members informed of any developments.
