Course Overview

In this face-to-face workshop participants will gain the knowledge and skills to perform Venepuncture and Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation on a simulated patient/client/resident’s arm.

Participants will be encouraged to consider their own scope of practice, including ensuring awareness of their own organisational policies and procedures in decision making about roles and responsibilities in relation to cannulation and venepuncture.

Please note this is non-accredited training.

Course content:

Topics covered within the course include:

  • Understand anatomy related to venepuncture/peripheral intravenous cannulation (PIVC)
  • Use equipment safely and competently
  • Perform venepuncture/PIVC with confidence
  • Identify procedural parameters, errors and complications
  • Recognise the causes of suboptimal specimens
  • Produce high quality specimens to maximise the quality of test results
  • Implement infection prevention and control strategies

You will also get an opportunity to practice inserting IV cannulas and performing venepuncture in a simulation setting.
